My vagina was angry.
But that was before I found the monologues. They are such an amazing thing. I have been up since 6:30 because I had a dress rehearsal and we have two performances today.
I thought the monologues were just for fun. That they were a funny way to say “vagina.” I basically thought it was a comic routine until I started doing it last year. It’s so much more than that.
Eve Ensler, the playwright, uses the proceeds from the monologues to help women around the world. She’s trying to make sure no woman will ever be victimized again or made to feel less because of her gender. She plans on going until the violence stops, and I hope she’ll be able to close shop one day. Board up her windows and bid adieu because violence against women has stopped.
I don’t see that coming in her lifetime, but if we all work hard enough, we can do it.
The show in general is just fun. During our first performance, the audience couldn’t stop laughing. You hear women making orgasmic sounds, talking about tampons and trips to the gynecologist’s office.
In the same show, you find out about genital mutilation and rapes that occur across the globe that have been under-reported by the media. Go to vday.com and look up shows in your area!
